anyway, i'm almost finished reading a book by Dan Boone. I never had the chance to take a course from the man while at NTS, but hearing him preach and hearing my classmates talk about him gives me enough assurance that what he is involved in is worth checking out. So he wrote this book called Preaching the Story that Shapes Us. In the book he seeks to call the pastor/preacher beyond using only the three-point deductive style sermon into employing a more narrative inductive style. Being someone who has become very intriguied with the idea of narratives and stories being what shape us (maybe i'll explore this in another post), I saw the book on someone's counter and asked to borrow it. i haven't been disappointed. This is a phenomenal book and one i wish was out when i took preaching courses at seminary.it has provided a great resource for studying scripture, irregardless of whether or not i'll ever preach...i'm sure i will, just not that often. so, anyway, all my seminary and preachin friends...check this book out, it's extremely worth it...he even adds a few sample sermon texts at the end of the book as examples...

Our church community has made sharing our stories a regular part of our gatherings, and it has been powerful to realize that everyone is human, and that there's no good reason to look at someone and see ourselves "worse" than they are. People are people - with stories, backgrounds, history, etc. Interesting stuff that has opened up a whole new aspect of relationships and ministry within our community.
